October 2013: 1st Viennese Congress for Psychomotricity

On 12 October 2013 at the Centre for Sport Science and University Sports in Vienna

In the framework of this congress, three lectures and 13 workshops were held on the topic of efficient learning. According to the motto “Universität bewegt” (university in movement), the event offered the 80 participants, who came from all over Austria, an opportunity to connect and exchange ideas with experts.

Learning something is not a purely cognitive achievement, but it is strongly influenced by emotionality, feelings and sensations. The higher the motivation and interest in the content, the more sustainably it will be retained. “Psychomotricity is about intrinsically motivated learning, which is the kind of motivation that exists within individuals. With regard to children, it describes their curiosity; it leads children to create their own ideas and make their own, autonomous decisions on what to do, based on what they like and enjoy, and what they find meaningful”, said Otmar Weiß. In his opening speech, Prof. Weiß pointed out that efficient learning, a focus of the Psychomotricity university continuing education programme, was being evaluated in the framework of the research project “Psychomotorik in der Schule” (psychomotricity in school). Subsequently, the presentations by Josef Voglsinger (Austria), Klaus Fischer (Germany) and Thomas Moser (Norway) highlighted the topic from different perspectives and illustrated the current state of research. The workshops offered a rich selection of psychomotor teaching and learning methods, such as psychomotricity in the water, efficient learning using the Feldenkrais Method, or learning via movement and perception on and in the airtramp, a cushion filled with air, with a size of 8m x 14m x 1,35m. Horst Göbel, a lecturer of the Psychomotricity university continuing education programme at the University of Vienna, brought an airtramp from Hamm (Germany) and presented it for the first time in Austria.

Through this intense academic and social exchange, numerous new ideas and impulses were created, which are very important for the further development of psychomotricity in Austria.
