Karl Zemanek

Karl Zemanek graduated as a Doctor of Law from the University of Vienna in 1952, and became Associate Professor of international law and international organizations at the same faculty six years later. He held the post of a full professor from 1964 until his retirement in 1998. His professional experiences include the post of the Director of the Institute of international law and international relations at the University of Vienna (1986-1996), Guest Professor at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, as well as Guest Professor at the National Defence Academy (both 1965-1988). He was Legal Consultant of the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs (1967-2003), attended 12 sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations as member of the Austrian Delegation and Representative on the 6th Committee, and was President of the UN Conference on the succession of states in respect of Treaties (1977-78) as well as of the UN Conference on the Law of Treaties between States and International Organizations or between International Organizations (1986). He was also the 2nd Vice President of the Institut de Droit International (1999-2001).
